Dear Lash Beauties,
As a certified esthetician & lash artist, I believe in educating my lash beauties before they make a decision on any of the services offered at The Beauty Confidential. As a client, I have been in your position and the best advice I can give you is do your research.
THE GOOD
Want to wake up every morning and feel beautiful?
Then eyelash extensions are for you.
Eyelash extensions have cut down my beauty routine by at least 10 mins (yes, I use to be that girl who put strip lashes on e v e r y day). With eyelash extensions I am ready to take on the day with little-to-no effort !
So, what are eyelash extensions?
The application process consist of premier eyelash extension individually placed on each natural lash. Depending on what type of eyelash extensions you desire (volume or classic), the application process can take anywhere from 2-4 hours! Yes it seems like a long time, but I promise it is totally worth it!
The extensions are adhered to your natural lashes with the safest & cleanest adhesives (check out my other post about Borboleta Beauty & why I use their products)! This adheres the extensions to your natural lashes, providing volume, length, & curl! Amazing right? It is!
But, there are some cons concerning eyelash extensions that you should know about before making the decision to have them! Being informed is important, so keep reading!
THE BAD:
Before you book your appointment, here are a few things to ask yourself before having them done:
1.) Do you have enough time and money to commit to lashes?
The truth is lash extensions are a luxury service that do REQUIRE maintenance. Lash extensions need to be filled ever 2-3 weeks! Naturally, you shed 2-5 lashes per day, so do not be surprised when you notice your extensions falling out. Every natural lash is on a different 6 week cycle, therefore not all of your natural lashes fall out at once (thank goodness).
With proper aftercare, the longer your lashes will last, the more money you will save, and less time you will have to spend during your fills! (ew sounds like a math formula, but is is the truth).
2.) Do you have a tendency to pick or rub your eyelashes?
Unfortunately, some people say that eyelash extensions have ruined or damaged their natural lashes. With improper application or the use of poor quality products, this is true. But believe me, if done the right way, there is no damage at all!As a client you have to take responsibility in taking care of your lash extensions. Just like everything in life they need a little TLC. This means absolutely NO touching.
This type of behavior will damage your natural lashes. So trust me, do not pick your lash extensions!
3. Have you done the research?
As an esthetician and lash artist, my final piece of advice to you is, DO YOUR RESEARCH! This not only applies to eyelash extensions, but every beauty service you want to try.
The lash industry has exploded in the past couple of years. There are more lash artist, more lash brands, and more products on the market. Just like with any beauty service, there are certified professionals and there are those who learned how to do eyelash extensions watching youtube.
When shopping around for eyelash artist, you have to love their work & you must be able to communicate with them on what you want. Here are a couple of tips I can give you when researching for a lash artist (my next post will go more in-depth on this).
Do they have you fill out a client registration & consent form? Do they share what lash brand they use? Do they have a portfolio of their work? Do they post often of different clients? Do they have positive and unbiased testimonials?
…if not, move on!
THE UGLY:
Lastly, the absolute ugly about eyelash extensions. I don’t know why some technicians try to hide the truth concerning eyelash extensions, but just like any hair extensions there can be minimal damage and the rare chance of an allergic reaction. If you have sensitive eyes, or allergies then maybe lash extensions aren’t for you.
A great lash artist should inform you of this, so you can make the educated decision on whether or not you want to get eyelash extensions.
I tell ALL of my clients… eyelash extensions will not damage your natural lashes when applied correctly.
Your lash artist should be aware of what to look for if the extensions are causing damage, and they should inform you of what your lashes can and cannot handle prior to applying a full set!
Here are some examples of what eyelash extensions should never look like! This type of work causes damage to your natural lashes. When you go to a lash artist who is not certified or properly trained, your natural lashes can adhere together (not following proper isolation)!
If you use mascara (I do not advice this), DO NOT PUT IT ON THE BASE OF YOUR NATURAL LASHES! Only the tips. The reason is your natural lashes can be damaged. Just like gluing all the lashes together with incorrect technique (or cluster lashes, yikes!), mascara can also cause the lashes to stick together no matter how well your lash artist isolates each lash with the extension.
